Michigan was tripped up at home by Ohio State and drops to 3-3 in the conference and 13-5 overall. Ohio State stormed out of the gates taking a 7-0 lead and controlled play for most of the first half by dominating in the paint and playing some intense pressure defense. The Buckeyes led by as many as 11 points.
In the final 3 minutes of the first half Michigan went on a 9-2 run that was powered by Manny Harris (5 points) and DeShawn Sims (4 points) to close the Ohio State lead down to 4 at the break.
Michigan finally took their first lead of the game with 13:55 left in the game at 34-32. The two teams went back and forth for the next 3 minutes. Then during a two minute stretch St Douglass nailed two triples and gave Michigan a 44-40 lead. After a defensive stop Michigan had a chance to go up 6 or 7 points but did not convert. Ohio State then rolled off 7 straight points to go up 47-44. Douglass hit his third triple in a five minute span to tie the game at 47.
With about 4 minutes left in the game Michigan suffered a 3 minute debacle with a turnover, missed 3, missed free throw on the front end of a 1 and 1, a lost rebound, another turnover, and a intentional foul. The end result of that stretch was Ohio State going up 57-47 with a minute left in the game.
Michigan knocked down a couple of three pointers late but they were too far behind to complete the comeback and lost the game 65-58.
Manny Harris scored 21 points and had 7 boards to go along with 6 assists. Stu Douglass scored 12 points on 4-9 three point shooting. Ohio State was led by Evan Turner’s 19 points. Turner also 8 rebounds and 6 assists.
Inside the numbers: Michigan was outrebounded 29-22. Michigan had 13 assists on 20 field goals and turned the ball over 11 times.
Notes: Michigan was wearing throwback jerseys to honor the 1989 National Championship team. I thought they looked great.
Road to 21 wins: I had not projected this as win. However, I did project the upcoming game at Penn State as a win. That game becomes critical for Michigan. The Wolverines don’t want to be on a 3 game skid.
